OPPO 105 Review 2013

Soon after the success of previous series -BDP-103-, OPPO now designed their latest generation of high standard Blu-ray player, OPPO 105 Universal Audiophile 3D Blu-ray Player. This line come with up-to-the-second capabilities - 4K upscaling, 2D-to-3D conversion, and a high-quality USB 2.0 digital-to-analog converter. But what really makes the OPPO significant is the sound. It is because many of the 17-pound component chassis space is devoted to the audio circuitry.

The OPPO BDP-105 includes an all-new analog audio stage powered by two ESS Sabre32 Reference Digital-to-Analog Converters (DAC), balanced (XLR) & unbalanced (RCA) dedicated stereo outputs, a Toroidal linear power supply, and asynchronous USB DAC input. These high-grade elements are housed in a rigidly developed metal chassis and work together to offer exceptionally detailed and exact sound superiority along with reference quality video.

OPPO 105 Video Functionality:

• Upscaling to “4k” Resolution: The BDP-105 can additional signals from all video resources to 4K (that is, 3840 x 2160) output resolution. Yowza, that’s a lot of pixels!
• 2D-to-3D Conversion: Unlike the BDP-95, the BDP-105 can transfer 2D for 3D playback with improvements for depth and eye convergence levels.
• Multiple Video Inputs: sources were A) the disc player onboard, or B) various network content avenues such as Netflix. The BDP-105 maintains those inputs, but adds two more in the form of a set of HDMI inputs (one of which is MHL appropriate). This new wrinkle means that you can hook up other video source products, such as network streaming devices, set-top cable boxes, etc., to the Oppo, so as to take advantages of the BDP-105’s remarkably powerful onboard Marvell Qdeo Kyoto-G2H video processing engine-an engine much more strong than those typically found in some other source elements or typical AVR’s.

OPPO 105 Audio Performance:

• Increased Chassis: The OPPO 105 features a steel chassis that is important more rigid than the chassis used in previous Oppo players (including the BDP-95).
• Passive Cooling: the OPPO 105 is quiet as the proverbial tomb in operation, which is a pretty major development for those of us who might use the player in desktop systems where we would be seated at arm’s length from the player. The BDP-105 is intended around a fanless architecture, meaning that it is entirely passively cooled.
• Headphone Amplifier: The BDP-105 provides a built-in headphone amp that runs straight off the player’s ESS Sabre32 Reference DAC. No matter what resource(s) you listen to through the Oppo, you can keep track of them through your high-end headphones.

It has a multitude of inputs and outputs. The audio and video playback are excellent.The SABRE D/A converters are state of the art. The XLR balanced analog line outputs are very nice for my professional audio system, which was a feature I expressly wanted. But the XLR outputs are only 14.6 dBu (5 volts) and the pro audio level standard is 24 dBu (12.3 volts). The OPPO XLR balanced outputs are therefore not really full professional audio level. This was contrary to the information given me by OPPO in my pre-sale question. I was suspicious of this. That’s OK, I have plenty of pro line level gain.The quality of the unit is excellent, even though it is made in China. OPPO says it was designed in the US. The anodizing is a really tough black hardcoat. This is a top quality unit.

As a very happy owner of an Oppo BDP-93 but in need of some additional capabilities as my Outlaw 950 pre-pro was getting very long in the tooth and my ancient Carver C-1 stereo preamp had no way to decode the Dolby Digital from the new TV (no analog outs!).
Then what to my wondering eyes should appear but an audiophile grade blu-ray player (not just blu-ray – virtually everything, SACD, DVD-A, etc.) with pre-pro capabilities, accepting inputs from external devices and able to act as standalone high quality DAC as well. Unless you have a plethora of gear you may find as I did that you can use this BDP-105 to directly drive your power amps and act as your main processor and preamp. Streaming (wired or wireless) from DLNA or SMB shares and handling many file formats including .flac and .mkv. All this in addition to possibly the best blu-ray and upsampling output you’ll ever feed your display.
